The newbie game in Eve

A friend has turned up in Eve and so we were giving him a helping hand getting started last night. Of course I didn't have the skills to let him into the corp yet because of his race so I went out to get the ethnic relations skills so hopefully he can join tonight.

He turned up at our HQ and we gave him the odd spare ship, but this is where the newbie game really starts to look like it hurts. He couldn't use any of the gear we had because he just didn't have the skills. Forget twinking in this game, I could give him 10million to get himself started and he couldn't use anything he could buy. Luckily most of the skills only need to be at level 1 so he can get himself up to speed in a few days. Twinking also becomes a moot point because he'll have access to all of our corporation hangers and all of the gear that they contain. Boy, do they contain some gear. I've been meaning to go through and throw out some of the rubbish and turn it into missiles or something but I keep getting distracted by blowing stuff up.

As part of the fun last night we all went out in Frigates, which gave me a chance to refit my Merlin for my new skills and the various changes to gear that have occured in the year since I last flew her in anger. It turns out that frigates are still fun, and I'm a lot more powerful in it now than I was before. OK, I knew that both of them were true before I even got into it. We had a quick play with shield transfer arrays to see what they're actually like because we'd never tried them before and they're pretty useful. Maybe not as useful as having two ships fighting, but it would have made me able to shield tank against an NPC a lot bigger than me. It would be useless against players of course because the support ship would just get blown up first but it makes me curious about the logistics cruisers. Not quite curious enough to get one, but curious none the less. I am tempted to get a Tech 2 frigate though, but the question then becomes are they better than a destroyer? The skills are a lot less for a destroyer and they have more guns so a higher dps, but they don't have the massive armour and shield resistances.
