Fitting your ship is perhaps the most important skill in the game. Well, I say skill but with resources such as this thread it removes a lot of the guesswork and shows you what to aim for. Of course these setups are all useless if you don't have the skills to fit the gear, or the cash to buy them.
The thing is that we were sitting outside our corporation headquarters looking to see what people were fitting using ship scanners in order to work out what would sell and one common theme was the usage of Civilian shield boosters. Now these are special for several reasons. The first is that you have to buy one as part of the tutorial. The second is that they're very easy to fit and the third is that they are utterly useless. If you're shield tanking then the first thing you do is get your skills up and scrape together the cash for a better booster. We were doing a Cosmos mission the other weekend and in jumped a destroyer that promptly blew up, probably because he didn't realise that those two frigates that were doing OK with the spawn were piloted by experienced pilots and were also in fact Assault Frigates and so a lot tougher than his ship. Being the nosey type I went over to his barrel after deciding that he wasn't coming back for his stuff to take a look at what he had fitted. It was a general bunch of reasonably useful gear with the added bonus of a couple of those damn civilian shield boosters. It was no wonder the guy exploded so fast.
