So, the full source to Eve Online has been leaked to the internet has it? Great! Oh, wait. Let's examine that statement. "Full source" and "Leaked" spring to mind, let's have a look at what the code actually is.
Oh, it's just a dump of the python code that's included in the client. That's neither the full source or leaked. Oh well, an internet rumour is nothing without a bit of hype. Somebody must have done something clever to do this, and not just run it through a freely available tool. Oh, this is looking far less impressive now then.
So basically the story is that somebody has yet again taken a look at the eve client python code. People have been doing this since day one, and there's not a lot you can do to influence things from it. You can write pretty good macro miners apparently, but you can't cheat much beyond that as everything is checked on the server.
So where is the story? The great part of the story is that CCP are banning people left, right and center for mentioning it. Post on the forums and you're out. Download it over bittorrent and they're logging IPs and banning people. Mention it on your blog? Let's find out shall we?
CCP on one hand are really good at interacting with the community in some ways and totally incompetent in others. Banning IP addressed for torrents? If I have access to your network for any reason I can get you banned from Eve. If your ISP uses dynamic IPs then you can be banned for no reason! If you have a shared internet connection in a dorm or something then you can all get banned for one person. The comment that was most telling was that there is now a form of rickrolling that will get you banned by saying "here's a torrent of that cool video of that drake" or something.
So basically it's a reoccurring non-story that would have been ignored (yet again) if CCP hadn't totally overreacted and started banning people left, right and center. The real problem is the use of python in the client, if you don't want people to easily see your code then don't put it in an easily viewable form in the client.
I was going to put links in this post, but I'm scared of being banned. Maybe.
