This may not be a good idea

It's past midnight on a Saturday night. I look through the list of new DVDs to watch... 2001 on blu-ray came in.. Guess I'm not getting much sleep tonight! I'd say it looks good but I'm still in the first 6 hours of noise but no picture :)

*EDIT* 25 mins in. We have talking! I wish films nowadays could get away with that.

*EDIT* 36 minutes in. Ohh. HD means I can read the instructions for the zero G toilet.

So is the Bluray version actually any different. I mean it isn't really filmed in HD. My dvd player boasts of upconverting SD into HD, but I don't really see the difference.

Actually yes, it was filmed in HD. Film is a higher resolution than DVD, which is why we have the odd situation where the original Star Trek can be released on HD because it was filmed on film and it just needed the effect remade and a more modern show that was filmed on tape can't be.

A DVD upscaler can smooth over the jagged edges but it can't add the extra information that existed on the original print.

Ah that makes perfectly sense. Super I shall be looking for some classic films now in HD then, thank you.
