inFamous first impressions

I’m a day into inFamous and I think I’m in a position to give some impressions about the game. Firstly I have to say that I’m really enjoying the game. It has a nice visual style and once you get some powers under your belt, the ability to power slide along wires for example, it’s really enjoyable to just travel around the city. The bad so far Character Animation The character animation in the game is slightly old school. Linear progression between animation frames looks, to be frank, really awful nowadays and the running animations are rather comical. This is most apparent at...

The things you learn playing R-Type

Computer games used to be easy. When I was a kid with my Spectrum I’d think nothing of throwing myself against the same problem again and again until I learnt how to get past and encounter the next, probably more obscure, problem. I learnt how to get and what to do with a babelfish. I found out that using the pulley with the rubber chicken was rather useful. I’d worked out the foolproof method for docking in Elite 100% of the time! I’d even be able to get more than a few levels into R-Type. This week R-Type was released on...

Console MMOs, are they good or bad?

This year promises to be the start of a big push to put MMOs onto consoles. Previously we’ve only had games such as Everquest Online Adventures and Final Fantasy XI Online which, to be fair, haven’t been massive successes on the consoles. This year will see the first few games sneak onto consoles. It’s unclear at the moment which ones will make it, but games such as DC Universe Online, Freerealms and Age of Conan are all threatening to release on consoles sometime soon. The age of console MMOs is upon us, but what does that mean? The benefits of putting MMOs...

Mirror's Edge

It's rare that I ever really hate a game at the same time as loving it, but Mirror's Edge really manages to hit both ends of the spectrum during a single play through. The good parts are incredibly good. The visuals are amazing, as is the atmosphere. You can believe you're in the world which, combined with the fact that you can see your hands and feet, really helps the game work. The mechanics for the free running work really well as well, with choices to jump over obstacles or sliding under them. The game talks about flow, which...

Saints Row 2 First Thoughts

I've been playing Saint's Row 2 for a few days now. In fact I've completed one of the gang story lines so I've put some serious hours in already, but I'm not going to give any final thoughts until I've watched the end credits. So, what are my opinions so far? I played Saint Row 1 and really enjoyed, and so far I've enjoyed this one for the same reasons. It's got a nice sense of humour (The Oceans 11 plan mission briefing springs to mind as a nice touch, as does your character singing along to songs such as Final...

The downside to my last positive post

My last post was rather positive about WAR, but this one will be less so. I spent a large chunk of the evening with RvR as my primary goal, which means sitting in long waiting lists and trying to take a very stubborn cannon away from those stunties to push back and throw that balance back into favour of the much more appropriate red colour. Tenacious little stunties made that rather hard without a larger organised force, which wasn't forthcoming and so got rather dull rather quickly. This meant I spent a lot of time in a waiting list for a...

Bioshock PS3

Bioshock will need an install on the PS3 it seems: http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/10/bioshock-ps3-install-takes-10-minutes-4.98gb/ Now let me get this straight. In order to play you need to install a DVD worth of content onto the HD. The game also looks 100% the same as the 360 version and doesn't contain any new content that will take up any considerable extra space. So what they're saying is that they're putting the whole game on the HD because blu-ray is too slow. Don't get me wrong, this isn't just a knock on the PS3, I think that the 360 DVDs...

Uncharted: Drakes Fortune

One of the big things I love about achievements/trophies/whatever a game wants to call them is that they encourage you to play the game more, whether it be to get through to the end of the game, go back and play content you missed, or even to encourage you to try different play styles. Last week Uncharted: Drake's Progress was patched to support the trophy system on the PS3, the first full retail game to do so, and so I dropped in to have another look at the game. The first time I played it was just...

OK, Little Big Planet will be awesome

I have my doubts about Little Big Planet and how much effort your average gamer will put in to the creation side, but with this news. Sorry, that should be THIS NEWS as it needs shouting, the game just became an instant classic anyway.

Finishing games

Nat over at buttonmashing.com is asking an interesting question: Do you finish the games that you buy? I had to answer no, but the question is more complicated than that. I should start off by saying I play a lot of games. I probably on average buy one a fortnight, and since I have an interest in the mechanics of the games I tend to play a lot of games that do interesting things but people may consider to be bad games according to the reviews. Apparently either I have low standards or reviews are rubbish because I don't think...
