It wasn't the gliding this week that really scared me, it was upgrading my camera

I own a Canon 300D (Which goes by the unfortunate name of the Digital Rebel in some the less civilised areas of the planet) and there is one feature that I was really missing that the 10D has. This is the only difference between the two cameras that I care about, and that feature wasn't worth the extra £500 when I first got my camera. The problem is I like taking photographs of the moon and stars, and to do that with an SLR you really need to be able to lock the mirror up so that it moving doesn't...

And this is why the whole "No fear" thing falls down.

Monday evening I am going gliding with a bunch of guys from work. I've been a caver, climber and I've flown powered planes because of one thing: I have terrible vertigo and claustrophobia. When I was caving I had total trust in the guy who was leading us. It was the same guy when I was climbing, but I also had total trust in my equipment in a way you just can't get when caving (there's less of a risk of drawing). Flying I was in control when I was allowed to be, and the instructor knew exactly what he was doing. Which...

Re: Thoughts on writing an IL Disassembler

Wow. This means that both of the people who I thought should really be blogging (the other was John Robbins) are now going for it. Now that MS has taken over is there any room for non-MS people coming up with details about .NET? Take one of the things I'm writing at the moment for the debugger engine, an IL dissasembler. Does Matt Pietrek posting on the subject mean that I have to go mad and post like crazy on the subject just to get noticed? Well that's not going to happen. I have to get ready for the Farnborough air...

The best thing ever (for today)

I decided that I didn't own enough DVDs (no sniggering at the back) so I ordered a couple of seasons of M*A*S*H. Although I didn't realise it when I ordered them, these DVDs have the perfect feature that all DVDs can offer, but hardly any deliver on. Yes, I'm talking about being able to watch the epidodes in French. No, that's not right. It's the fact that there are two english tracks. To understand why this is a good thing you need to know something about the difference between M*A*S*H in America and in the UK. In the UK there...

I have a new tablet pc

I decided that I needed a laptop PC and so I decided to get myself a tablet PC. The HP tablets have exactly the form factor that I needed and so here I am sitting in front of the TV using a pen to write this post. The handwriting recognition is quite remarkable when you consider how bad my handwriting is and although the input panel is a large slowdown because I can write much faster than the panel will recognise my scrawl, it's almost totally accurate and so it's easy for me to write without having to way too much about what is...

Donald Knuth's "The art of computer programming" volume 4

I just found out that Donald Knuth is progressing with volume 4 of his epic "The art of computer programming". If you don't know what I'm talking about then shame on you. There hasn't been a new volume published since well before I got my first programming job, and so I'm looking forwards to volume 4. They're not exactly light reading, but if you want to know about any of the subjects covered in the books you can't go far wrong from reading that section and the books are as close to the definitive resource on the subjects covered that you're...
