The ultimate bacon sandwich Part 3

Part 1 and Part 2 Comments have been made about the necessity of making my own bread for my ultimate bacon sandwich and so I'm clarifying why it's needed. Yes the taste is important but what really lets a bacon sandwich down is when the bread starts to break up after only a few bites. The problem is that the sandwich gets quite thick very quickly because you not only need at least a double layer of bacon and a fried egg (possibly two, haven't made up my mind yet) and between 7 and 9mm of lettuce. When you add the...

The ultimate bacon sandwich part 2

After my experiments last weekend I have decided that the only way to create the ultimate bacon sandwich is to make my own bread. Experimentation on bread recipies starts this weekend.

And the results of what was taking out my internet was...

I now have conclusive proof as to what was taking down my internet connection. It turns out that's it only happens when a Java application running under MacOS on my mac mini downloads a lot of data. Humph. The mac seems to need a reboot after all of that to stop it happening, which is pretty annoying. I still don't have any answers as to if it's a software or hardware issue but the same application running on XP doesn't have any problems. I would try upgrading Java but Apple want me to pay lots of money in order to...

Something is killing my Internet

My broadband keeps going down for a few seconds, which is a real pain when you're trying to play online games. I assume it's BTs fault, but just in case I've been switching things off to see if it made a difference. I haven't seen it since I turned off my Mac, which is a bit worrying. I wouldn't make the connection usually, but since I can crash the boxes entire ability to network with alarming regularity just by running a Java application I'm beginning to wonder. If it stays up I'll boot it up into Linux for a day...

The ultimate bacon sandwich

This weekend I'm going to develop the ultimate bacon sandwich.

A quick rant about software

What sort of company thinks that the media player that comes with the OS should need a paid upgrade in order to do something simple like play back a video full screen? How bad at money grabing can a company get? What's next, micropayments for security updates? Or how about micropayments to enable each feature of your operating system? Now there's an idea. "You appear to be trying to set a screensaver. This will cost you a total of...". Genius! In answer to the first question, the sort of company who thinks that full screen video is a special feature that...

Follow up to the last post

The film is good. Going to bed now.

I'm getting tired

It's Wednesday at 4pm and I'm getting tired. Normally this isn't a problem but tonight I'm doing something that I really wasn't planning on doing: a midnight showing of Star Wars. I got suckered in when a friend mentioned that she was going the other day and asked if I wanted to come. In just over 8 hours I'll be sitting in a cinema trying to stay awake and trying to work out how much coffee I'm going to have to drink tomorrow in order to stay awake at work all day. At least I didn't spend the day off...

The evil empire of the OS world

There's a company out there that's truely evil, and they make operating systems. They've been around for a long time and lots of people actually pay money in order to use their software. Their current weapon of choice is a media player though, and they've used that to attract more users to their cause. In fact the EU has forced them to remove the player from the OS. Actually the last one was a lie, the EU doesn't care about them much, although they may get got on their overpricing of tracks in the UK in their music store. Of...

I am a slave to COM

My waking hours are taken up by the COM interface IReferenceTime. I try to make it do what I want; bend it to my needs. I suspect that what I'm trying to do is wrong, stupid and foolish but it's the only way I can see to get the performance that I need. I fear I may be going mad. I've dreamt of Rhubarb every night this week and to be honest I'm beginning to get a tad freaked out by it.

I got my name on google too fast, and slacking with writing

A little while ago I mentioned that my full name is Jonathan Shute because Google didn't point to me under that name. Yesterday I remembered that I had done that and had a quick check and now that post is on the first page. I can only assume that Google is intelligent enough to know that Jon and Jonathan can be versions of the same name and so it was weighted accordingly. To see if this is true I'll mention my brother, David Shute, and see if that shows up. I've been slacking on the debugger article. Too many things to...

I'm now all set up for Astrophotography

Well the mount arrived for my camera at last, and I tried to use it last night to take some pictures with my telescope. Conditions were pretty useless and it's a real bugger to focus so all I have from the evening are a bunch of pictures of Jupiter that show no detail at all. On the plus side the planet is about 90 pixels across so it's better than I could get through my 800mm lens. Of course it's cloudy at the moment and looks like it will remain that way all week so I'm probably not going to...
