More on WPF/E for the Mac

I'm a happy person because of this blog. Come on MS, do the rest of the framework and I'll never say another bad word against you. Of course if MS sold, say, Windows Vista for the Mac, then I'd be even happier. It could just be a Wine like subset, but can cost as much as Window usually does. All I ask for is DirectX and a good representation of Win32 APIs. Now that's something that'll never happen. It's a bit like the fact that no PC maker will ever make a laptop as nice as a Mac for cost reasons....

Doesn't WPF need managed code in order to do anything useful?

According to this article Microsoft is planning on bring a subset of WPF to older versions of Windows and Smartphones. Great, they're both MS OSs that have .NET available already. The article also states that it will support MacOS as well though. This isn't full WPF as it seems to be designed for running through web browsers as a sort of Ajax replacement I guess, but what can you do with just Javascript? I wouldn't want to write anything serious in Javascript so it's going to be limited to small applications with server back ends. I really can't see the point...

S-Video output

Why is the S-Video output from my MacBook Pro so much better than I've managed to get from any PC that I've tried? What is the Mac doing differently? I don't believe that everything I've tried (including very expensive PC laptops) just has substandard hardware. In other news: Vista delayed again. Not by much, but it's another boring setback. I wish it would just hurry up and be released so I could use it because XP just looks so primative after you've used the new accelerated UI for a while.

Just how many buttons do you need?

When Frontrow was announced Steve Jobbs made a point of saying that the Apple remote was so much better than the Media Center remotes because it had nowhere near as many buttons. In fact is has 6 buttons. Volume up and down, forwards and backwards. Play/Pause and menu. This works great for things like the music part of the application. The video player works fine too. So do the pictures. The DVD player on the other hand is another matter. How the hell do you navigate DVD menus? I've tried and I can't figure it out. At the moment as...

It's new toy time

My new laptop turned up today (finally) and so I'm now the happy owner of a MacBook Pro. Yeah, the name sucks but it's still better than the awful name "Inspiron". Mr Dell, if you're trying to hint that it may inspire me you're probably underestimating my intelligence. I guess nobody can name computers. iMac? Terrible name. Dimension 4300? Ok, Dimension is better but still not great. Mac Mini, well that' just the best of the lot because it does exactly what it says on the tin. Anyway, MacBook Pro. Darwine (a windows emulator of sorts) went on fine so I...

RE: The Origins of Go

I have a rather spectacular career average for all of the times I've played Go because even though I learnt to play it over a decade ago I've yet to win a game. I admit that I haven't played for a long time because there's only so much loosing that I can take before I realise that I may well suck at the game. One day I'll be able to find a player who is worse than me, and when I do I'll crush them. In the meantime I came across an interesting post on the history of Go over...

People don't seem to understand Apple and the PVR market

With the introduction of the new Mac Mini it's finally fast enough to run FrontRow, and the latest version is included along with a remote. I believe that the Mini is one of the best looking computer ever made, and it'll look great under my TV and there's no doubt that many people are considering one for the same reason. The thing that everybody comments about is the fact that you can't record TV on it (here for example) and I've seen a couple of people say to wait until the version is released that has full PVR support. These...
