An updated comment on Crossover Mac

Back here I commented on the beta of Crossover Mac and basically said that it had promise but most of the applications supported had Mac versions or counterparts. Well this post is an update to say that it supports an application that I like, use and need and so my review has changed to this. Crossover Mac is a great product that is a must have if you want to use any of the supported applications on your Intel Mac. It's far less hassle and more usable than Bootcamp and even beats Parallels for usability because it uses far less...

And the award for the worse UI design too is...

I'm vaguely aware that I've now got more music software on my Mac than I will ever understand but there is one part of it that is very appropriate for this blog: The Native Instruments Support Center that is used for licence management. This tool is, like everything else in the music world, a non-standard UI. All of the plugins tend to look like what they're emulating and high performance but the activation tool is written in something that I consider to be totally inappropriate for a desktop application: Flash. I'm not totally against Flash, but I really don't understand...

Frustration, and music videos

Well I managed to spend my Saturday failing to explain why my code in one assembly crashes every time it is run. Well I say every time, there's at one machine that can compile the code so that it runs on one of the test PCs. I don't have any idea why, but it's certainly enough of a problem to mean I'm thinking too much to get dementia any time soon. Now that it's 4am I've pretty much given up on finding the problem tonight so I'm considering music instead. My goal this year is to sell some music, and I think that's not an unreasonable goal...

Team Server is great, but only when it works

I know what my mistake was with Team Foundation Server: I installed the service pack. The install on the server seemed to go fine, but it broke the code analysis so that it couldn't run as part of the build. It worked from inside visual studio so I thought I'd do the simple fix of upgrading it to SP1 as well. Of course this is a really horrible install because it's 400MB in size, takes about a fortnight to run and pegs your box at 100% processor usage for much of this time. The biggest problem is that after a...

Thoughts on the new Apple products

The keynote has come and gone and here's my thoughts on what they announced. The AppleTV is a massive waste of time outside the US, and a pretty big one over there. It can't output SD so it's effectively HD only and yet it can only output 720p and not 1080i or, more importantly, 1080p. On top of that there's no way you're going to be able to add new video codecs such as DivX to the thing without some serious hacking and so you're really limited to the sources of data that you watch. In America this is OK because...

What I want from Apple this week

It's time for Apple to get the press into a frenzy about what they're releasing this year and I thought I'd weigh in on my thoughts. This is what I want: A new version of Logic Pro. Don't get me wrong, I like the old version but it's time that they asked me for more money in return for some cool new features. An upgraded Mac Mini. With the iTV going up against the Mac Mini for the under the TV market I'd like to see a few things such as high def output added. I'd also like the...
