What is it with PvP all of a sudden?

City of Heroes: Episode 4

...and...

Everquest II: Expansion 1

What with these, Guild Wars, and the much bemoaned 'Honor System' addition to World of Warcraft, it seems pretty much everyone is doing PvP nowadays.

It's a wierd, paradoxical thing - practically every game has it, yet no-one really picks a MMORPG because of it. PvP-specific servers are far outwieghed by non-PvP servers, yet even the non-PVP servers usually have small bits of the world for PvP, and a duel function that only roleplayers use. Everyone imagines it would be a fun diversion, and that they might be good at it, yet no-one wants to be on the recieving end. Usually, it takes little intrinsic player skill, bar the accumulation of rare and powerful equipment, and levels, yet grants outrageous bragging rights for a successfully conducted ambush. People who are good at it usually talk like gangster rappers, yet run around with pointy ears, magical spells and ponies.

I've been there, and done that, and often look back on two years of playing on 'Zek, and twitch uncontrollably and whimper. I used to hate all things PvP, but nowadays, I have a more 'Live and Let Gank' attitude to it all. Call me 'faggot', but as long as I can opt out totally, I don't care what those monkeys get up to. I don't imagine that all PvP enthusiasts are maladjusted psychopaths of course...but, well, Lum has a story...
